National Reinsurance Corporation of the Philippines

NRCP

The National Reinsurance Corporation of the Philippines, commonly known as Nat Re, is the country’s only domestic professional reinsurance firm. Incorporated in 1978 under the Corporation Law and Presidential Decree No. 1270, the company was also designated as the vehicle for the Philippines’ participation in the Asian Reinsurance Corporation — a multilateral reinsurance entity established to foster regional cooperation among insurance companies across Asia. In 2006, Nat Re solidified its standing as the nation’s sole domestic professional reinsurer following its merger with Universal Malayan Reinsurance Corporation.

Headquartered at the 31st Floor, BPI-Philam Life Makati, 6811 Ayala Avenue, Makati City, Nat Re draws on more than four decades of on-the-ground presence in the Philippine insurance market. The company provides life and non-life reinsurance capacity to independent insurers and multinationals operating in the Philippines, as well as to reinsurers abroad seeking to diversify their portfolios. Complementing its core reinsurance offerings, Nat Re also delivers consultancy, technical, and advisory services, helping clients better manage retentions and capital, maximize net premiums within their risk appetites, and sharpen their competitive edge.

Nat Re writes both life and non-life reinsurance through treaty and facultative arrangements. Its life reinsurance covers mortality and morbidity risks, medical reinsurance, catastrophe, and coinsurance, while its non-life portfolio spans fire, engineering, marine, aviation, casualty, motor, property, surety, and other miscellaneous lines. The company promotes the development of local insurers by providing a mechanism for risk distribution, allowing companies to maximize retention and reduce portfolio volatility.

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) serves as Nat Re’s largest shareholder with a 25.7% ownership stake, followed by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and MICO Equities, Inc. as other major shareholders. Nat Re is a publicly listed company trading on the Philippine Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol NRCP.

Nat Re holds strong credit ratings both locally and internationally. In the Philippines, the Insurance Commission accepts Nat Re’s PRS A rating — issued by the Philippine Rating Services Corporation — for risk-based capitalization purposes. Globally, Nat Re carries a B++ rating from AM Best, the most widely recognized ratings agency in the insurance industry. These ratings reflect the company’s solid market franchise, experienced management team, sound investment portfolio, and robust capitalization.

Beyond its commercial operations, Nat Re is an active participant in key industry and regional organizations, including the Philippine Insurers and Reinsurers Association (PIRA), the East Asian Insurance Congress (EAIC), and the ASEAN Reinsurance Working Committee (ARWC). The company also plays a role in significant industry initiatives such as the Philippine Catastrophe Insurance Facility and the Philippine Crop Insurance initiative, reinforcing its commitment to building a more resilient and inclusive insurance landscape in the country.
