Semirara Mining and Power Corporation is the largest coal producer in the Philippines, accounting for 97% of the country’s coal production. Acquired by DMCI Holdings in 1997, the company is the only power generation company in the country that runs on its own fuel. Through its subsidiaries, Sem-Calaca Power Corporation (SCPC) and Southwest Luzon Power Generation Corporation (SLPGC), the company supplies baseload power to the national grid.
The company successfully transformed from a mining company into an integrated energy enterprise after acquiring 2x300MW coal-fired power plants from the National Power Corporation in 2009. Its truck and shovel operations can produce 16 million metric tons of coal a year. The company has an installed generating capacity of 900MW, with an additional 1,200MW in the pipeline.
By integrating its coal mining activities and power operations, the company has created a value chain that enables it to transform low-value input into high-value output in a continually efficient and responsible manner. In 2008, the coal mining operation secured certifications for international standards of Environmental Management System/ISO 14001:2004, Occupational Health and Safety Management System/OHSAS 18001:2007, and Quality Management System/ISO 9001:2008. The subsidiaries have likewise been in conformance to Quality Management System/ISO 9001:2015, Environmental Management System/ISO 14001:2015, and Occupational Health and Safety Management System/OHSAS 18001:2007.
