Sun Life Financial Adds New Board Member: Marcia Moffat Joins Leadership Team

Sun Life Financial Inc., a big insurance and financial company with offices around the world including the Philippines, has announced that it’s adding a new person to its Board of Directors. Think of a Board of Directors like a group of experienced adults who help make important decisions for a company – kind of like a student council, but for businesses.

According to the announcement made on March 5, 2026, Marcia Moffat will join Sun Life’s Board starting March 6, 2026.

Who is Marcia Moffat?

Ms. Moffat has worked in finance and banking for 30 years – that’s three decades! She has worked in different countries including Canada, the United States, and France, and knows a lot about managing money and leading teams.

Her most recent job was as the boss (Chief Executive Officer) of BlackRock Asset Management Canada Limited. BlackRock is a company that manages money for other people and organizations. During her time there, she helped the company grow much bigger over 10 years, bringing in more money for the company to manage for its clients. She was such an important leader that she was part of BlackRock’s Global Operating Committee, which means she helped make decisions for the entire company worldwide.

Her Previous Work Experience

Before working at BlackRock, Ms. Moffat spent 12 years at Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), one of Canada’s biggest banks. She did different jobs there:

  • She started as an investment banker, helping big companies get money they needed to grow their businesses
  • She managed the bank’s communications with people who own shares in the bank (investor relations) during a difficult time called the global financial crisis
  • She led the bank’s home loan business, helping people get mortgages to buy houses

Even before that, she worked as a lawyer in New York and Paris for a company called Shearman & Sterling (now called A&O Shearman), helping companies with complicated financial deals between different countries.

Her Education and Community Work

Ms. Moffat is very well-educated. She has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, a law degree (Juris Doctor), and a science degree in Biology from well-known Canadian universities – University of Toronto and McGill University.

She also helps other organizations by serving on their boards. Right now, she’s Vice-Chair of the C.D. Howe Institute and a Director at the University Health Network Foundation. She has previously held leadership positions at several other important organizations in Canada.
