SM Prime Holdings Inc., one of the biggest mall owners in the Philippines, is working together with the government to make it easier for people to travel around Metro Manila and nearby areas. They’re doing this by building better connections between their malls and public transportation like trains and buses.
According to a press release filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on March 25, 2026, SM Prime is investing more than P300 million to create a direct walking path between the LRT-2 Antipolo Station and SM City Masinag in Antipolo, Rizal.
What Does This Mean for Commuters?
Think of it like building a covered bridge that connects a train station directly to a mall. Instead of walking outside in the rain or heat and crossing busy streets, people can walk through a protected pathway that has:
- A roof to keep you dry when it rains
- Ramps and elevators for people who have difficulty using stairs
- Lights so it’s safe at night
- Security cameras (CCTV) to keep people safe
Jeffrey C. Lim, the president of SM Prime, explained that making it easier for people to move around the city is important for the country’s growth. He said this partnership with the government started during the pandemic when improving public transportation became really important.
When Will This Be Ready?
According to the announcement, construction will start in the second quarter of 2026 (that means between April and June) and should be finished and ready to use six months later. This project is being done together with the Light Rail Transit Authority, which is the government agency that manages the LRT trains.
Other Similar Projects
SM Prime has already built similar connections at other locations:
SM North EDSA: A busway concourse (a special walkway connecting to bus stations) opened to the public in March 2025. It has covered walkways, elevators, and escalators that connect directly to the busway station.
SM Megamall: They’re building another concourse here, and the northbound section is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026 (January to March).
Real-Time Traffic Updates
SM Prime is also partnering with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to help commuters check traffic conditions. They’ve installed screens in some malls that show live traffic information from MMDA’s AI Traffic Management System. This means people can check how bad the traffic is before leaving the mall and choose better routes.
