Metro Retail's Sales Grow 5.4% in Q1 2026 as Profit Nearly Doubles

Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. (MRSGI), one of the major supermarket and department store chains in the Philippines, announced strong results for the first three months of 2026, according to a media release dated May 14, 2026.

What Happened to Their Earnings?

Think of net income as the money a company gets to keep after paying all its bills. Metro Retail’s net income reached PhP25.8 million in the first quarter of 2026. This is 92.5% higher compared to the same period last year—meaning they almost doubled their profit!

How Much Did They Sell?

The company’s total sales (the money they made from selling products) reached PhP9.38 billion during the first quarter. This represents a 5.4% increase compared to the first quarter of 2025. In simpler terms, if they sold PhP100 worth of products last year, they sold about PhP105 worth this year.

What Products Sold Best?

According to the company, all their main business areas grew:

  • Food retail (groceries and supermarket items) grew the most at 6.3%
  • General merchandise (department store items like clothes and home products) grew by 2.5%
  • Sales from stores that have been open for a while (called “same-store sales”) also went up by 2.9%

Why Did Profits Grow So Much?

The company’s gross margin—which is like the difference between what they pay for products and what they sell them for—improved to 21.7% from 21.3% last year. This improvement came from selling more profitable products, especially in their food retail section.

Their EBITDA (a measure of how much money the business makes before certain costs) increased by 14.9% to PhP474.7 million.

What Are They Spending Money On?

Metro Retail’s operating expenses (the costs of running the business) went up by 6.6% to PhP2.15 billion. The company explained this increase was mainly because they’re opening new stores, expanding their network, and improving existing locations.

New Services in Their Stores

Metro Retail is trying something new: they’ve started putting Generika Drugstore branches inside some of their stores. They began with two test locations—one in Ayala Feliz and another in Tagaytay. The company plans to add about twelve more of these drugstores inside their retail locations before the year ends.

Company President and COO Joselito G. Orense explained that these results show their efforts to grow their business while keeping costs under control and improving how efficiently they operate.

Metro Retail currently operates 81 stores across Luzon and Visayas regions. They run different types of stores including Metro Supermarket, Metro Department Store, Super Metro Hypermarket, Metro Value Mart, and Metro Home Improvement and Lifestyle. The company continues to open new branches as part of its expansion strategy.
