Alsons Consolidated Resources, Inc. (ACR), a company listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange under the ticker “ACR”, is working on several new power projects to help provide more electricity to Mindanao and other parts of the Philippines.
According to a press statement released by the company on May 28, 2026, ACR is focusing on building more power plants because the demand for electricity is growing quickly, especially in Mindanao.
Why Is There a Need for More Power?
Think of electricity like water flowing through pipes to your home. When more people need water at the same time, you need bigger pipes or more water sources. The same thing is happening with electricity in Mindanao.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the amount of electricity people and businesses in Mindanao need is expected to grow by 12.34% compared to last year. This means Mindanao will need much more power to keep homes, schools, factories, and businesses running.
In 2025, the highest amount of power needed in Mindanao at one time reached over 2,600 megawatts (MW). To understand how much that is, one megawatt can power about 750 homes. Meanwhile, across the entire Philippines – including Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao – the peak demand exceeded 19,000 MW.
The company noted that Mindanao’s economy grew by 4.69% in 2025, which was faster than the national average of 4.4%. Five out of Mindanao’s six regions were among the country’s top 10 fastest-growing areas, according to data from the Philippine Statistics Authority.
What Is ACR Doing About It?
ACR, which is the publicly listed company of the Alcantara Group, is building several new power projects. The company is especially interested in renewable energy – which means power that comes from sources that don’t run out, like the sun and water.
“As the economy grows, demand for reliable and sufficient power will continue to rise. Electricity remains essential in supporting industries, businesses, infrastructure, and communities, while also helping attract investments,” said Antonio Miguel B. Alcantara, Chief Executive Officer of the Alsons Power Group.
Solar Power Projects
ACR is developing two major solar power projects:
- Bawing Solar Power Plant – A 75 MWac solar facility in General Santos City
- SPPC Solar Facility – A 98.7 MWac solar project in Sarangani Province
What makes the SPPC Solar project special is that it’s transforming an old diesel-fired power plant (which burns fuel to make electricity) into a solar power plant (which uses sunlight). This is considered one of the first projects of its kind in the Philippines.
The first phase of the SPPC Solar project, which will produce 45 MWac, won a spot in the Green Energy Auction Program Round 4 (GEAP-4). This means the project has already secured buyers for its electricity, making it more stable for the long term.
ACR Chairman Nicasio I. Alcantara explained: “We have been actively advancing our renewable energy development program, conducting feasibility and interconnection studies for solar and integrated energy storage projects across General Santos City, Sarangani Province, and other locations in Mindanao and the Visayas.”
Hydropower Projects
Besides solar power, ACR is also working with water power, called hydropower. In 2024, the company started operating its first hydropower plant – the 14.5-MW Siguil Hydro Power Plant in Sarangani. Hydropower works by using flowing water to turn turbines that generate electricity.
Making Existing Power Plants Better
ACR isn’t just building new plants – it’s also improving its existing ones. The company is studying how to add battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid technology to its conventional power plants in Zamboanga and Iligan.
Think of a battery energy storage system like a giant rechargeable battery that stores extra electricity when there’s too much, and releases it when people need more power. This helps make the power supply more stable and reliable.
