Sun Life Financial Inc., a big insurance and financial services company that operates in the Philippines and many other countries, has announced that they’re adding a new member to their Board of Directors. Think of a Board of Directors like a team of experienced advisors who help guide important decisions for a company.
According to the announcement made on July 31, 2026, Katherine Lee will join Sun Life’s Board of Directors starting that same day. Sun Life trades on stock exchanges in Toronto, New York, and the Philippines using the ticker symbol SLF.
Who is Katherine Lee?
Katherine Lee is someone with a lot of experience in managing money, investments, and business. She has worked in leadership roles for over 20 years and has served on boards of directors for both public companies (companies whose shares anyone can buy) and private companies (companies that are privately owned).
Her expertise is especially valuable during times when companies are going through big changes. Sun Life said that Ms. Lee will help them as they work on their important goals and create value for their clients and shareholders (people who own pieces of the company through stocks).
Her Career Background
Ms. Lee spent 20 years working at GE Capital, where she took on bigger and more important jobs over time. She worked in teams across Canada, the United States, and Asia.
From 2010 to 2015, she was the President and CEO (the top boss) of GE Capital Canada. During this time, she led the company through major changes and helped create partnerships that made the company more valuable over time.
Before that, from 2002 to 2010, she was CEO of GE Capital Real Estate Canada. She also held other important positions, including working on mergers and acquisitions (when companies buy or join with other companies) in San Francisco, and managing real estate investments in Korea, working from Seoul and Tokyo.
She started her career at Ernst & Young, a major accounting firm, where she worked in auditing (checking company financial records) and then moved to helping companies with financial problems and restructuring (reorganizing to work better).
Board Experience
Besides her work experience, Ms. Lee has served on the boards of several well-known companies for more than 20 years, including BCE Inc., Colliers International Group Inc., the Public Sector Pension Investment Board, and Chorus Aviation Inc. These roles gave her knowledge about how to properly oversee companies, manage risks, and make strategic decisions, especially for companies that have to follow strict rules and regulations.
Education and Recognition
Ms. Lee has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Toronto and is a Chartered Professional Accountant (a special certification for accountants).
She lives in Toronto where she volunteers and helps mentor young professionals. In 2025, she received the Horatio Alger Award, which is given to people who show integrity (being honest and having strong moral principles), perseverance (never giving up), and compassion for others, and who have achieved success in their personal and professional lives.
