Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC), one of the Philippines’ major banks, announced that it earned P4.11 billion in net income during the first half of 2026, according to a press release filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on July 29, 2026.
What Does This Mean?
Think of a bank like a store that sells money services. RCBC made P4.11 billion in profit (money left after paying all expenses) in just six months. However, this profit was affected because the bank set aside extra money for possible loan losses due to uncertain world events – kind of like saving extra allowance just in case something goes wrong.
How Did RCBC Make Money?
The bank’s total income reached P33.91 billion, which is 11.6% higher than the same period before. The biggest boost came from “net interest income” – this is the difference between the money banks earn from loans and what they pay to people who deposit money. This income jumped 18.2%.
RCBC’s “net interest margin” improved to 5.1%, which means the bank is earning more money from every peso it lends out. The bank also controlled its spending better, bringing its “cost-to-income ratio” down to 53.6% – imagine spending only 53.6 pesos for every 100 pesos you earn.
More Filipinos Are Borrowing from RCBC
Customer loans grew to P806.0 billion, up 9.0%. The biggest growth came from regular people (consumers) borrowing money, which increased 22% to P402.4 billion. This means more Filipinos are getting personal loans, car loans, or home loans from RCBC. The bank credits its computer systems that help understand what customers need and partnerships with other companies to reach more people.
How Strong Is RCBC’s Financial Position?
RCBC’s total assets (everything the bank owns) stood at P1.41 trillion, while its capital (the bank’s own money) reached P150.84 billion. The bank has a Capital Adequacy Ratio of 13.4%, which is above what regulators require. This ratio is like a safety cushion – it shows the bank has enough money to protect depositors even if some loans go bad.
Customer deposits totaled P1.06 trillion, providing stable funding for the bank’s operations.
What Else Is RCBC Doing?
The bank continues expanding its digital payment services. It partnered with the Social Security System (SSS) for a special Mastercard debit card and worked with government agencies to create a modern payment system for the LRT-2 train line that uses international standards.
In April 2026, RCBC raised P20.5 billion by selling bonds (borrowing money from investors) specifically to fund environmental and social projects.
RCBC President and CEO Reginaldo B. Cariaso said the bank is strengthening its defenses and balance sheet while carefully growing its business to navigate the challenging economic environment.
