Metro Retail Stores Group Hits Record P41.56 Billion in Sales, Opens 10 New Stores in 2025

Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. (MRSGI), one of the Philippines’ supermarket and department store chains, announced its financial results for 2025 during its recent stockholders’ meeting. The company shared that it achieved record-breaking sales and continued expanding its stores across the country.

Breaking Records: First Time to Hit P40 Billion

According to the company’s disclosure filed with the Philippine Stock Exchange, MRSGI reached a major milestone by crossing the P40-billion mark in sales for the very first time. Here’s what the numbers look like:

  • Net Sales: P41.56 billion – this is 4.9% higher than the previous year (that means they sold almost 5% more compared to 2024)
  • Net Income: P682.64 million – this went up by 12% (net income is the actual profit the company keeps after paying all expenses)
  • EBITDA: P2.63 billion – this increased by 12.4% (EBITDA is a way to measure how much cash the business is earning from its operations)
  • Same-Store Sales Growth: 0.6% – this means stores that were already open showed a small increase in sales

Think of it this way: if you had a lemonade stand last year that made P100, and this year you made P105, that’s similar to what Metro Retail achieved – steady growth even when things weren’t easy.

Growing Bigger: 10 New Stores Added

MRSGI didn’t just grow its sales – it also grew the number of stores. By the end of 2025, the company operated 81 stores nationwide, after opening 10 new locations during the year. These new stores included:

  • Five small-format “Value Mart” supermarkets (these are smaller, neighborhood-type stores)
  • A supermarket and department store in Bais, Negros Oriental
  • A new store concept called “Metro Corner” – a special type of store with carefully selected lifestyle products meant to give shoppers a better experience

New Ideas to Attract Shoppers

The company introduced several changes to keep customers interested:

  • Blue Camp Re-launch: Metro Retail brought back its own clothing brand called Blue Camp, offering affordable apparel options
  • Better Technology: The company invested in a system called NetSuite to help them make smarter business decisions based on data
  • Healthcare Partnership: MRSGI partnered with Generika Drugstore to bring affordable medicine and healthcare services inside some of their stores

Going Green and Helping Communities

Metro Retail expanded its use of solar power to 19 stores, meaning these locations use energy from the sun to help run the stores. This is better for the environment and helps reduce electricity costs. The company also continued programs to reduce waste and use resources more efficiently.

Facing Challenges Head-On

Chairperson Sherisa Nuesa explained that the company faced several difficulties during the year, including problems from international conflicts, changing oil prices, and rising costs. Despite these challenges, Metro Retail remained strong by focusing on three main things:

  1. Customer-intimacy: Understanding what customers want and need
  2. Operational optimization: Running stores more efficiently
  3. Merchandise innovation: Offering new and better products

President and Chief Operating Officer Joselito Orense said the company will continue opening new stores carefully while improving existing ones and making shopping better for customers.

Leadership for the Future

During the meeting, shareholders elected the company’s Board of Directors. The board includes family members who founded the business (Sherisa P. Nuesa as Chairperson, Margaret Gaisano-Ang as Vice-Chairperson, and Jack S. Gaisano) as well as professional managers and independent directors who help ensure the company is run properly.
