Metro Retail Opens 83rd Store in Biliran: What This Means for the Growing Retail Chain

Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. (MRSGI), one of the Philippines’ major retail companies, has just opened a new store in Naval, Biliran. Think of it like when your favorite toy store opens a new branch in a town where there wasn’t one before – that’s what Metro Retail is doing, but with supermarkets and department stores!

What Happened?

According to a company disclosure filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Metro Retail opened what they call “Metro Naval” in Biliran Province. This is a big store that combines three things in one place:

  • Metro Market – where you can buy groceries and food
  • Metro Department Store – where you can buy clothes and other items
  • Metro Home Lifestyle – where you can buy things for your house

The store is located in the capital municipality of Naval and was officially opened with local government officials present, including Biliran Governor Rogelio J. Espina and Naval Mayor Gretchen Stephanie M. Espina.

Why Is This Important?

This new store is Metro Retail’s 83rd store nationwide and their 12th store in the Eastern Visayas region. It’s also their 65th location overall. The company is expanding to areas outside big cities like Manila and Cebu, bringing modern shopping options to smaller provinces.

Joel Orense, who is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Metro Retail (think of him as one of the top bosses), explained their goal: “Metro Naval represents our commitment to growing alongside the communities we serve. As we expand our footprint across the country, we want to ensure that families in provinces like Biliran have access to quality and affordable retail options while also creating opportunities that contribute to local economic growth.”

In simple words, they want people in smaller provinces to have nice stores nearby where they can shop, and they also want to create jobs for people living there.

About Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc.

Metro Retail is a company that owns and operates different types of stores across the Philippines. They have stores in Luzon and Visayas under several names:

  • Metro Supermarket
  • Metro Department Store
  • Super Metro Hypermarket
  • Metro Value Mart
  • Metro Home Improvement and Lifestyle

The company is listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange, which means regular people can buy small pieces (called shares) of the company. According to the filing, Metro Retail has 3,233,746,000 common shares outstanding.

What This Means

By opening stores in provinces like Biliran, Metro Retail is betting that there are enough customers in these areas to make the store successful. This strategy focuses on “regional growth,” which means growing in areas outside the biggest cities where there might be less competition and more room to grow.

The new store is expected to create jobs for local residents and help the local economy by partnering with local suppliers and vendors who can sell their products at the store.
