Century Pacific Food Recovers 8 Billion Sachets Worth of Plastic Waste Since 2019

Century Pacific Food, Inc. (PSE: CNPF), a major food company in the Philippines, has announced that it has recovered plastic waste equivalent to 8 billion sachets since 2019. This recovery effort prevents these plastics from ending up in the environment and harming nature.

To put this in simple terms: imagine 8 billion small plastic sachets (like the ones used for condiments or seasonings) – that’s how much plastic waste the company has helped collect and keep out of oceans, rivers, and streets.

How Does Century Pacific Clean Up Plastic?

The company works with an organization called PCX through a program called Plastic Cleanup Partner (PCP). Here’s how it works in simple steps:

  • Century Pacific pays for “plastic credits” – think of these like tickets that represent the amount of plastic packaging they use
  • This money funds the actual collection and processing of plastic waste from communities
  • The collected plastic is then either recycled into new products or converted into energy instead of polluting the environment

According to the press release, CNPF has achieved 100% recovery of its flexible plastic packaging waste footprint, meaning they’re recovering as much plastic as they’re putting out into the market. This accomplishment comes ahead of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) law, which requires companies to manage their packaging waste.

Why Is This Important for the Philippines?

The Philippines faces a serious plastic waste problem. According to a study by The Ocean Cleanup mentioned in the announcement, the country is the largest contributor to oceanic plastic waste globally. This means solving this problem requires everyone – the government, communities, and businesses – to work together.

Century Tuna’s “Saving Our Seas” Campaign

Beyond just paying for plastic recovery, Century Pacific’s popular brand Century Tuna runs a campaign called “Saving Our Seas” (SOS). This program does more than just beach cleanups:

  • It turns waste into money for small business owners, particularly women microentrepreneurs
  • The campaign partners with HOPE’s Aling Tindera program, where women buy waste from people and prepare it for recycling or upcycling
  • In 2025, during International Coastal Cleanup Day, more than 8,200 volunteers joined the effort across six coastal locations in the Philippines

The company also worked with local government offices in La Union, training 49 hospitality groups on proper waste management and helping enforce the province’s ban on single-use plastics.

What the Company Says

Greg Banzon, CNPF’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, acknowledged in the press release that offsetting waste “isn’t perfect, but it is a solution that allows us to act now rather than wait.” He emphasized that solving plastic pollution requires continued teamwork between government, communities, and businesses.
