Megawide Construction Corp., a major construction and infrastructure company in the Philippines, announced on May 20, 2026, that it earned P265 million in profit during the first three months of 2026. This represents a 26% increase compared to the same period last year, even as a conflict in the Middle East began affecting businesses worldwide.
Understanding the Numbers: Where Did the Money Come From?
Think of Megawide as having three different businesses working together. Here’s how each one performed:
- Construction business: Made P262 million in profit – this is like when you build houses and buildings for others
- Real estate business: Contributed P14 million – this is when you sell or rent properties you own
- Landport business: Had a small loss – these are bus terminals and transportation hubs
The company’s total revenues (all the money coming in from sales) reached P4.81 billion, which is 14% more than last year. The construction business remained the biggest money-maker, bringing in P3.84 billion (up 5%). The real estate business more than doubled its earnings to P831 million, while the landport business stayed steady at P138 million.
What Does “Margin” Mean?
When companies talk about margins, they’re explaining how much profit they keep after paying for everything. Megawide improved its gross margin from 22% to 24%, and its net margin increased from 5% to 6%. This means the company is getting better at keeping more money from every peso it earns.
Paying Off Debt: A Big Financial Achievement
One of the most important achievements Megawide reported was reducing its short-term debt (money it needs to pay back soon) by almost P6 billion in just the first quarter. This is significant because:
- It reduces the interest payments the company has to make (estimated savings of P250-300 million for the year)
- It gives the company more financial flexibility to grow
- It improves the company’s financial health
According to Edgar Saavedra, Megawide’s Chairman and CEO, the company is following a strategy focused on growing revenue while also strengthening its balance sheet to improve profitability.
Measuring Financial Health
The company’s debt-to-equity ratio improved significantly – from 1.54x at the end of December 2025 to 1.1x by the end of March 2026. In simple terms, this ratio shows how much debt a company has compared to the money owned by shareholders. A lower number means the company is in better financial shape.
The net debt-to-equity ratio also improved, dropping below 1.0x (from 1.1x to 0.8x). This shows the company is successfully managing its long-term financial program.
Plans for the Rest of the Year
Jez dela Cruz, Megawide’s Group CFO, shared that the company plans to pay down another P2.5-3.0 billion from short-term obligations during the remainder of 2026. This will help boost liquidity (having cash available when needed) and create more room for future growth.
Current Projects
As of the end of March 2026, Megawide has a construction order book worth P48.7 billion – this means they have contracts signed for future construction work totaling that amount. The company is currently working on:
- Around 11,000 socialized housing units under the government’s expanded 4PH program
- Carbon Market Redevelopment for public market renewal
- Baguio City Integrated Terminal
- South Luzon Integrated Terminal Exchange
- Cavite Bus Rapid Transit System
About the Middle East Crisis Impact
Saavedra mentioned that while the company maintained healthy performance early in the year, the full impact of the Middle East War that started in February 2026 has not yet been measured. The company is actively monitoring the situation and adjusting its strategies to stay on track with its goals.
About Megawide: The company has been publicly listed since 2011 and is known as one of the most innovative engineering and infrastructure companies in the Philippines. It partners with the Philippine Government on major infrastructure projects including airports, terminals, and schools.
